This is the perfect book for anyone trying to find their way in the business of jazz. Mike Longo, a long-time first call New York pianist, author, teacher, and record company founder, was focused on several right choices from the beginning. As he moved from simply gigging, to being a regular in Dizzy Gillespie’s travelling ensemble, more right choices presented themselves and Mike was ready to seize the moment each time.
As a life-long musician myself, I found this book to be very helpful. Even if I may be well past certain aspects of Mike’s journey, The Rhythm of Unity gives excellent examples of what the jazz world is all about. Mike and Dorothy show us how a musician can live their life and work with dignity and respect. These are choices to be made at any stage of the game. The next choice is always the most important.
The Rhythm of Unity also gives the reader insight into one of jazz’s most influential figures. Dizzy Gillespie was a many faceted character. Yes, his work with Charlie Parker was ground breaking, but there is quite a bit more to the story. Dizzy was extremely well versed in the rhythms of the world, and music from all cultures, and he was constantly searching out new talent and offering them a leg-up in the very competitive business of music.
