You may be thinking, wait a minute, it’s only March! But if you’ve ever ventured to Columbia for the We Always Swing series shows, you know that you better have your tickets in hand and be prepared to be entertained by the best jazz talent in the world. Shows have been selling out all season, and this one is sure to be another sell-out.
They complete the 11-concert subscription season with one of jazz’s true rising stars. Truth be told, by the time May 2023 rolls around, we all may be pinching ourselves that we had the opportunity to see VOCALIST SAMARA JOY in such an intimate space as Murry’s – given her star-like trajectory that has transpired during the past two years.
Born into a musical family with strong ties to gospel and soul, Ms. Joy recalled, “I constantly heard my family singing inspirational music together, which instilled in me an appreciation for my musical lineage.” After hearing Sarah Vaughan’s version of “Lover Man” and pianist Tadd Dameron’s recordings featuring trumpeter Fats Navarro, Joy claims, “I was hooked.”
It’s appropriate, then, that in the soon thereafter she won the prestigious vocal competition that honors Vaughan. Still in her mid-20s, Joy’s shining, smooth voice impresses. Wrote The Guardian, “Her approach is simple but beautifully poised, and when she does take off on an improvised passage or coda, the trickiest notes present no problem.”
Here’s the link to ‘try your luck’ at getting a seat or two to hear the recent 2 time Grammy winning vocalist, Samara Joy.
