When he’s not gigging in nightclubs like Johnny’s in Liberty, renowned trumpeter and flugelhornist, Stanton Kessler can be found online, hosting Jazz in the Village, a weekly jazz appreciation class sponsored by The Village Presbyterian Church.
The classes are set to run from Feb 16 to March 16, on Tuesday nights, from 7:30pm to 8:30pm. (sorry, we missed the first two) The popular program takes the novice and experienced jazz listeners through the music, from Louis Armstrong to Snarky Puppy.
Contact carol.dale@villagepres.org to get a Zoom invitation to Stanton’s jazz appreciation course. “I try to cover the gamut of styles and genres,” explained Kessler. “I include some brief historical points and anecdotes.”
Kessler is a well-known bandleader, clinician, and educator. He is regular contributor to JAM Magazine and performs with Sons of Brasil and Stan Kessler Quartet. He teaches jazz trumpet, theory and improvisation, and music business classes at UMKC and Western State University.
KC jazz lovers will remember fondly Stan’s many bands theFlat Five, Eightball and Baby Leroy plus Parallax, SKTV, Horoscope, and many, many more.
Asked about how the class is going, Kessler couldn’t be more enthusiastic. “I hope to inspire the beginner and broaden the scope of the avid jazz fan. Personally, I’m having a blast!”
