Kansas City Jazz Orchestra with Sean Jones Opens 2022-23 Season with Trumpet Tribute

The Kansas City Jazz Orchestra kicks off its 20th Anniversary Season with trumpeter Sean Jones Friday, Sept. 30th, at 8 p.m. The concert will be held in the Helzberg Hall of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. For ticket information, visit www.kcjo.org/2022-23-season or call 816-994-7222.

Sean Jones is one of the most in demand trumpeters in the world. Almost 20 years ago, Jones was hired for a six-month stint with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. After which, JALC musical director Wynton Marsalis, offered him a permanent position in the ensemble as lead trumpeter, a post Jones held from 2004, until 2010.

He went on to record a Grammy winning album with Nancy Wilson in 2007, travelled the world with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Marcus Miller in a Miles Davis Tribute in 2011. He has produced and released seven of his own recordings on Mack Avenue Jazz. His most recent in 2017, Sean Jones: Live from Jazz at the Bistro.

“With the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra’s season opening concert, The Horn,” we celebrate that tradition wholeheartedly,” maintained KCJO leader Clint Ashlock. “It’ll be a night to remember. To bring the whole thing to a boiling point, the centerpiece of the concert will be the majestic, soulful artistry of Sean Jones. Sean can make his horn whisper a secret, shout in joy, and burn like flame."

Mr. Jones is equally at home in classical music, performing with many of the leading orchestras, and he is an internationally recognized jazz educator. He is president of the Jazz Education Network and has served as artistic Director for the NYO JAZZ Program of Carnegie Hall. He was Chair of the Brass Department at Berklee College of Music in Boston. He is currently the Richard and Elizabeth Case Chair in Jazz studies at The John Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute in Baltimore.
