The concept of a Jazz Winterlude has worked very well at Johnson County Community College. The series is a good respite from the winter blues, and it has been well attended by jazz fans. The 2022-2023 series, held at the Midwest Trust Center, will conclude on Sunday, February 19th at 7pm, in the Polsky Theater with a performance by trumpeter Trent Austin.
Oran Etkin and Jazz Youth Outreach
On January 15th, Bobby Watson took the stage at Yardley Hall to a packed house. One short week later, world traveler, Oran Etkin (Or-Ron) came in for 2 shows in the Polsky, as part of Jazz Winterlude. Etkin played the Sunday evening show, however he arrived in town a day early to entertain future jazz listeners.
The concept, called Timbalooloo, can be viewed at www.oranetkin.com under the video tab. Beginning at 11am on Saturday, January 21st, long before many jazzers are out of their pajamas, Etkin took the stage, with a full band and without an instrument, and began weaving a musical web that wrapped this crowd of rambunctious youngsters around his little finger.
The crowd: mothers, fathers, and youngsters, from babes’ in arms to middle-schoolers were instantly drawn in by Etkin’s humble charm and the music of Ellington, Monk, and Dizzy Gillespie.
This is the sort of jazz education that will make a kid beg to join band in the fifth grade. There was not a dull moment, and after the hour had passed, Etkin left the young crowd wanting more, and needing a nap. Perfect for every mother and father in attendance.
