Jazz Night at Sunflower Music Festival

June 20 Celebrating African American Composers

Featuring the 20-piece City Light Jazz Orchestra – Under the direction of Angela Ward with Wayne Goins, Jason Goudeau, Daniel Dinsmore, Mike Herrera, Louis Neal, the JWB, and special guests including vocalists Angela Hagenbach, Richetta Manager, and David Basse and MORE special surprises.

Each June, the Sunflower Music Festival in Topeka presents 10 nights of world-class music free of charge. The chamber music festival began in 1987 and is under the Artistic Direction of Charles Stegman.

In 2011, the festival invited internationally known jazz trumpeter Sean Jones to perform with his New York group. The concert, a jazz night, was wildly popular. Mr. Jones returned, wowing audiences 4 years in a row. Now, the Sunflower Jazz Night is a tradition.

“Jazz is, in a way,” said Stegman, “America’s own chamber music genre.” Over the past decade the festival has featured Sean Jones, Karrin Allyson, Deborah Brown, Joe Cartwright, and pianist Eldar Djangirov.

The free festival is held at White Concert Hall, on the Washburn University campus, in Topeka and runs June 18 through 25, 2022. The entire Festival, including Jazz Night, will also be live streamed to a virtual audience at a nominal charge.

Luxury Coach Service Available Round Trip from Kansas City by calling (913) 642-5491.

As always, the festival is presented free to our audiences, although this year, on account of ongoing pandemic restrictions, space will be limited at White Concert Hall with complementary tickets to be made available through the Sunflower web site.

Sunflower Music Festival invites jazz lovers in the Kansas City area to join them for Jazz Night at White Concert Hall on June 20, 2022, at 7:30 p.m. Or tune in to a live-stream performance. Details will be available on the Sunflower web site in May, at www.sunflowermusicfestival.org. Jazz lovers should also consider tuning into to other Festival concert offerings, which begin with a chamber orchestra concert on Friday, June 18, at 7:30 p.m.
