Big Band Smooth Jazz at the Kauffman KCJO Welcomes Grammy® Award-winner Kirk Whalum

Whether you’re already a huge fan of Grover Washington and George Benson, or if you still need convincing, our Kansas City Jazz Orchestra—winner of the 2021 JAM Award for KC’s favorite big band—plans to blow the roof off the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts on March 12 with a completely fresh take on contemporary jazz.

Grammy® Award-winner Kirk Whalum, the saxophonist heard on Whitney Houston's mega-hit, “I Will Always Love You,” joins the KCJO for this concert. A saxophonist, songwriter, and celebrated recording artist in his own right, Whalum toured with Whitney Houston and is featured on many recordings, including those of Luther Vandross, Kenny Loggins, and many others.

Whalum’s musical accomplishments have earned him twelve Grammy nods, including his first win in 2011 for Best Gospel Song: "It's What I Do", featuring Lalah Hathaway and Whalum’s lifelong-friend Jerry Peters.

The March 12 KCJO concert, dubbed Just the Two of Us begins at 8pm in Helzberg Hall at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.
