Bassist Tim Brewer and Large Group to Premiere Three River Scenes February 19, 2023

The world premiere of Three River Scenes, a musical characterization of a day in a city, on a river, will be presented on Saturday, February 18th, 2023, at 7:30 PM, in Battenfeld Auditorium, room 1003 of the Student Center, KU Med Center. The piece was written by bassist and composer, Tim Brewer who happens to be a well-known and retired local dentist.

This new third-stream composition will be performed by the Medical Arts Symphony Orchestra, based in Kansas City, and the longest running medical arts related, community orchestra in the United States. Tim, and his wife Carolyn Glenn Brewer have been members of the esteemed orchestra for more than 15 years.

The orchestra will be joined on February 18th for Three River Scenes by the Doug Talley Quintet; featuring saxophonist Doug Talley, trumpeter Joe Parisi, and a rhythm section that includes pianist Roger Wilder, drummer Keith Kavanaugh, and Mr. Brewer at the upright bass.

The piece is in three movements, Cityscape, Twilight, and Celebration. It is meant to take the listener on a journey in sound. With a form similar to a concerto grosso, passing the written orchestral material between the smaller jazz group, and the larger orchestra.

This composition is jazz mixed with classical, or third stream music-a term coined by Gunther Schuller in 1959, modern classical music mixed with jazz improvisational sections included in each movement, which will in this case, feature members of the Doug Talley Quintet.

The Three River Scenes concert is free and open to the public and presented one night only. Saturday, February 18th, 2023, at 7:30 PM in Battenfeld Auditorium, room number 1003 in the Student Center of the KU Med Center, located at the NE corner on Rainbow Boulevard and Olathe Street. Across for Commerce Bank.

With limited seating, you may want to plan to arrive early for this historic event.
